KABUL: Wahid Qetali, Governor of Herat Province in the west, claims that the incomes of custom office in the Islam Qala border port are looted by powerful armed groups and mafia.

The Islam Qala point is one of border ports between Afghanistan and Iran. The others are in Farah and Nimroz provinces respectively.

Qetali said that 90 per cent of goods imported from Iran belong to mafia who do not pay custom taxes.

5,000 shipments were imported to Herat custom office without paying taxes this year, according to Qetali, who said that he would fight against mafia.

“The custom office incomes in Herat are looted for several years. Who can investigate it? Thousands of cars were stolen here, who will investigate it?” he said, adding that only last year, 4,000 cars were stolen in the province.

Qetali ordered tens of trucks suspected for escaping from taxes be seized along Herat-Islam Qala road. The trucks are stopped and an investigation is going on.

The businessmen pay for only 10 per cent of the goods they import, while 90 per cent is done by mafia unpaid.”

He asked staff and workers of Islam Qala border port to stop strike.
