Pre-election turmoil; 120 voter registration centers closed in Kunduz
AT-KABUL: More than 120 out of 220 voter registration centers in Kunduz have remained closed due to security threats, said the Independent Election Commission’s office in Kunduz.
This comes as The IEC statistics show that more than 4.2 million people have registered to vote since the beginning of the process in mid-April.
IEC Kunduz Head Rasul Omarsaid three districts including Qala-e-Zal, Kalbad and Gul Tapa are devoid of voter registration centers. “More than 120 voter registration centers are closed in Kunduz. We have shared this with security agencies to launch military operations for ensuring the safety of those areas and for opening the centers,” he added.
Kunduz residents meanwhile called on government to keep all voter registration centers open in Kunduz so that they can vote in the upcoming elections in the country.
“We call on government to remove problems faced by voter registration process in Kunduz province,” said Mirwais, a resident of the province.
Kunduz police said government forces are ready to launch military operations in areas under security threats.
“We are fully prepared for operations in areas under high security threats. We will launch military operations in those areas after demand from local residents,” said EnamuddinRahmani, spokesman for Kunduz Police Headquarters.
