Some 10,000 self-immolation cases recorded this year: MoPH

AT-KABUL: Ministry of Public Health on Sunday said that 9,555 self-burning cases have been recorded across the country this year.

“We have registered 2,016 cases of eating poison and 9,555 cases of self-immolation across the country in 2016,” a senior official at the ministry told Afghanistan Times.

He called depression as the reason of 70 percent of suicide attempts.

Stress by 20 percent and mental problem by 18 percent is the other reason for committing self-suicide, he added.

He stated that suicide was a social issue and the health sector only will failed to cope with the challenge, thus it is required of everyone to play role in the aspect.

The health ministry commemorates the world suicide prevention day under the motto of “contacting, mutual understanding and supervision” in order to motivate people to prevent self-suicide in the society, he added.

He highlighted that the ministry also will work hard to increase awareness among people about self-suicide in order to cope with the issue in a better manner.

He said that based on World Health Organization report one million people lose their lives due to attempting self-suicide, who are mostly between 15-29 years old.

According to the world health organization, 1,205 people lost their lives due to attempting suicide in Afghanistan in 2014. Out of mentioned figure 643 were women and 562 men, who had committing self-suicide in the country.

Suffering from stress and have been diagnosed as mentally ill. Schizophrenia, depression, and personality disorders are the most frequently diagnosed conditions behind committing self-suicide.
