16 policemen killed in Helmand attack

AT-KABUL: At least 16 police officers were killed and six others were injured in a Taliban attack in Afghanistan’s Helmand province that also left 10 militants dead.

The gunfight started last night that continued for several hours in a region near to Takhtapol area of Mosaqala district of Helmand province.

After severe clashes at least 16 policemen and ten Taliban fighters were killed and six policemen and tens of militants were injured, a provincial official, who pleaded anonymity, told Afghanistan Times.

He said the policemen that came under attack belonged to Baghran district, but were stationed in Mosaqala.

Despite several hours of fierce clashes, the policemen did not receive reinforcement, because Taliban were already in ambush to prevent reinforcement that finally resulted in police casualties, source said.

Several police vehicles were also destroyed and set on fire after Taliban overrun the security base, while taking remaining weapons and vehicles with them.

A Taliban spokesman responsible for southwestern Afghanistan, Qari Yusaf Ahmadi, claimed credit for the attack. “Twenty-five soldiers were killed and 13 others injured,” he claimed.
