Taliban capture Darqad district of Takhar

AT-KABUL: Taliban fighters captured Darqad district of northeastern Takhar province after a four-hour battle with security forces on Wednesday morning, an official said.

Sanullah Timori, spokesman for the governor told Afghanistan Times the insurgents launched their attack on the district center late yesterday night.

After nearly four hours of fighting the militants gained control of the district in the morning he said. He said four local policemen were killed and two were injured in the attack.

Taliban fighters suffered heavy casualties but he had no exact details as fighting was still going on.

A counter attack has been launched and a heavy fight was underway to recapture the district back, he said.

Taliban in a statement claimed to have taken control of the district as result of heavy fight in which they claimed to have killed 12 policemen while some others were injured.

The district is located on border with Tajikistan and near to the Archi district of Kunduz where Taliban has a strong presence.
