Taliban lose grip in Helmand

AT News Report-KABUL: The Taliban has lost its momentum and spectbeen weakened in the southern volatile province of Helmand, particularly in the Musa Qala district, the newly appointed provincial governor said Sunday.

“Our attacks have put strong impacts in the region, the enemy has been demoralized in Helmand and they are unable to get face to face with our brave security forces,” Mohammad Yassin said.

In a series of airstrikes carried out by the US air force in the Musa Qala district of Helmand, a Taliban session was targeted on May 24, according to the US military statement that said 50 insurgents including a shadow Taliban deputy governor for Helmand, a number of shadow district governors and military and intelligence officials were killed.

But, a Taliban spokesman, Qari Yousuf Ahmadi, said the airstrikes targeted a house, killing five civilians.

Five out of 14 districts of Helmand are now under the Taliban control, according to Yassin. But the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR), said in April that the militants held nine districts.

Taliban have intensified attacks in different provinces just after they announced their spring offensive title ‘al-Khandaq’ in April.
There are 15,000 NATO soldiers in Afghanistan that are engaged in advising and training Afghani military and opolice.
