KABUL: The Taliban say they are perusing a plan offered to their leadership by the United States envoy for Afghan peace Zalmay Khalilzad on peace in Afghanistan.
Khalilzad met Taliban’s political leaders based in Qatar over the weekend and handed them his peace plan which suggests an interim government to replace incumbent president Ashraf Ghani.
The plan was first offered to Ghani in Khalilzad’s last week visit to Kabul. Ghani strongly opposed with an interim government plan, saying he would hand over the power to a person succeed him through election.
Khalilzad went to Pakistan on Monday, according to reports. There, he met Pakistan army chief, Qamar Javed Bajaw in Rawalpindi.
Pakistani media reported that Khalilzad shared his Afghan peace plan with Pakistani officials.
Separately, the United Nations Envoy for Afghanistan Deborah Lyons also flew to Qatar to hold talks with Taliban leaders.
A meeting on peace began between Afghan government and Taliban representatives early September in Qatar still continues but no progress has been made yet.
