Unrest recedes in Farah

By Farhad Naibkhel-KABUL: In the wake of a week-long painstaking military drill of the government security and defense forces in western Farah city, the insurgent Taliban combatants have been pushed back and violence has receded, according to local authorities, allowing residents to resume their daily life after days of unrest and fierce fighting.

Taliban massively attacked city of Western Farah province last week and succeeded to control part of the city for few hours, but after hours of the insurgents’ outrage, Afghan forces along with coalition forces started operation and pushed Taliban back from the city. During operation over 300 taliban were killed and same number of them were wounded during ground clearance operations backed by Afghan and international air forces.  Although in the first three days city was under threat of Taliban attack, but today no threats inside and around the city.

“Afghan forces along with coalition forces repelled threats and currently situation is normal in the city of Western Farah province,” said Governor of Farah Basir Salangi.

He said that several security belts have been established inside and around the city of Farah.

Currently establishing of check posts going on in the city in order to reinforce security in a better condition in the city of the province, he highlighted.

He said shops and most of governmental offices open in the city and people are continuing their routine business way of any concern.

He insisted that Afghan, army, police NDS forces along with coalition forces working over plans to foster more security in the city of Farah.

After completely improvement of security in the inside and round of city of Farah, operation will be expanded to the districts of the province, he said.

Meanwhile Farah Provincial Council Chief Farid Bakhtawar said that currently there are no threats in the city and people are doing their business and work without any fear in the city.

He said that security belts have been established inside and around the city and Afghan security forces area engaged in establishing checkpoints inside the city.

He said that Afghan forces pushed away enough Taliban from the city and now they are located around 15km far from city.

Although threats rebuffed from the city now, but still Taliban have powerful presence in different district of Farah province, he asserted.

He said that out 10 districts Taliban are presence in 80 percent of nine districts of Farah and only center of the district are under control of Afghan forces or they only have few posts in the districts.

He said that Afghan forces along with Resolute Support forces working over security plans and they pledge to expand operation to districts in the provinces in order to make better security in the province in future.

It is pertained to mention that yesterday security brass along with General John W. Nicholson Commander of the Resolute Support Mission visited Farah province and pledge to address security challenges as soon as possible.
