KABUL: The US Secretary Mike Pompeo in a telephonic conversation with President Ashraf Ghani, reaffirmed his country’s commitment to achieving a durable peace in Afghanistan.

The secretary underscored Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad’s role in facilitating an inclusive peace process, US Department of State said in a statement on Wednesday.

The Secretary also emphasized the importance of an intra-Afghan dialogue and the role of a ceasefire in ending the violence and creating the conditions for the Afghan government, other Afghan leaders and the Taliban to sit together and negotiate a political settlement, the statement added.

Finally, the Secretary emphasized the important gains made by the Afghan people since 2001 and US desires for a long-term partnership with Afghanistan.

“I spoke to Secretary Mike Pompeo over the phone this evening. Reiterating the stance and commitment of the United States, Secretary Pompeo stressed that there is no uncertainty and ambiguity about the U.S. commitment to Afghanistan and our enduring partnership,” President Ghani wrote in his twitter account.

He also underscored the central importance of ensuring the centrality of the Afghan government in the peace process. He reiterated the U.S. commitment and support to holding the upcoming presidential elections in July, he further wrote.

“We both agreed that words, rumors, and speculations cannot replace actions and that our partnership and resolve will remain strong in the pursuit of peace.”
