US hosts quadrilateral meeting on Afghan peace

KABUL: Washington is willing to host a two-day meeting between ZalmayKhalilzad the US special representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation, and representatives from Russia, China and the European Union (EU), where they would shed lights over important Afghan issues according to the US Department for Foreign Affairs on Thursday.

Russian Special Envoy ZamirKabulov arrived in Washington while Chines ambassador to Washington and EU special representative would also attend the huddle.

International community’s assistance with Afghan peace process and role of regional countries in bring all the parties to talks and development in peace process would be discussed during the meeting.

This comes as recently Khalilzad concluded fifth round of talks with Taliban members in Qatar, where they reached agreements on key issues to end the 18-year Afghan war.

Counterterrorism efforts, troop’s withdrawal, not using Afghan soil against any other country, and intra-Afghan talks were main points the two sides agreed.

After ending the peace talks, Khalilzad returned to Washington where since that he is busy meeting Americans officials and foreign representatives, and now quadrilateral meeting is scheduled, possibly in a bid to find consensus on Afghan peace process.
