World Bank commits $403m to boost education, empower women
World Bank on Tuesday announced a donation of $403 million to Afghanistan in bid to foster education system and strengthen social and economical opportunities for women in the country.
According to a statement issued by Government Media and Information Center (GMIC), said that Acting Minister of Finance Mohammad Humayon Qayomi has signed the agreement with World Bank Country Director for Afghanistan Shubham Chaudhuri on Tuesday in a press conference.
Acting Minister of Finance Mohammad Humayon Qayomi said that this new financial package will be invested for fostering of educational facility in primary and secondary schools, capacity building in higher education system and strengthening of social and economical opportunities for women across the country.
He said that investment over education and empowerment of women is the direct way to reach to gender equality, decrease poverty and boost up their economic condition.
Out of $403 million, 298 million will be allocated to the Ministry of Education for Iqra program, 100 million for empowerment of rural women and five million for higher education project, he added.
World Bank Country Director for Afghanistan Shubham Chaudhuri, said that investment over new generation, guarantee of youth access particularly girls to qualified education as well as empowerment of women is the top agenda of the World Bank.
