279 rebels killed in nationwide raids

AT-KABUL: At least 279 armed Taliban fighters have been killed and 188 others wounded in different crackdowns over the past 48 hours.

In a press release issued by the Ministry of Interior (MoI) said that Afghan National Police (ANP) in cooperation with Afghan National Army (ANA) and operatives of  National Directorate of Security (NDS) conducted clearance operations against insurgents in different areas of  Samangan, Takhar, Faryab, Kapisa, Kandahar, Oruzgan, Maidan Wardak, Logar, Paktiya, Ghazni and Helmand provinces. As many as 63 rebels have been killed and 46 others injured in the nationwide operations, the statement added. According to the press statement, the Taliban militants suffered the heaviest casualties in Greshk district of southern Helmand province.

In the meantime, the Ministry of Defense (MoD) said that security forces have killed 216 Taliban militants and wounded 142 others in various joint operations in Kunar, Laghman, Kapisa, Maidan Wardak, Ghazni, Paktia, Urzgan, Daykundi, Kandahar, Takhar, Kunduz and Helmand provinces.

“Security forces also detained 11 suspected militants during the crackdowns and handed them over to judicial organizations,” the MoD said in a press statement.

The statement added that Afghan forces also recovered a huge cache of weapons during the operations. It said that around 12 Afghan army troops were also killed in fight against Taliban militants.
