5.1 magnitude earthquake hits northeastern Afghanistan

Kabul: An earthquake of magnitude 5.1 hit Fayzabad, Afghanistan on Tuesday morning, the National Center for Seismology said. The earthquake struck 89 kilometre east of Fayzabad and had a depth of 112 km.
Moazuddin Ahmadi, the head of information and culture of Badakhshan, told Bakhtar news agency that an earthquake shook Badakhshan province around 3:50am Tuesday morning.

According to him, the earthquake had a magnitude of 5.1 on the Richter scale and was centered in Shaghnan district of this province.

This quake follows June 22 earthquake that struck south-eastern Afghanistan, leading to wide-scale destruction across already vulnerable districts in Paktika, Paktya and Khost provinces.
