800km road to be constructed this year

AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: The Ministry of Public Works (MoPW) will construct 800 kilometers road in different parts of Afghanistan this year, said an official on Wednesday.

Deputy Minister of Public Works, Ahmad Shah Wahidi, said that the ministry will soon start construction of the roads. “Second line of Kabul-Nangarhar Highway, ring road of Kabul city, Kabul-Mazar-e-Sharif Highway and some other important roads will be constructed this year,” he added. He said that the ministry will also complete last year’s incomplete projects.

“We will start the construction of the road in two phases. In the first phase we will complete the incomplete projects and in the second phase we construct new roads,” he said, adding that some of the projects are funded by the some donors.

He said that projects will be completed at the total cost of $400 million. “We will implement these projects, only if we were not hindered by insecurity and lack sufficient budget,” Wahidi added.

Officials in the Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) said that construction of the roads will help boost trade.

Khanjan Alokozai, deputy chairman of the ACCI, stressed that the roads should be constructed in accordance to international standards.
