KABUL: At least 16 Taliban fighters were killed in counterattacks staged by Afghan security forces in southern Helmand and northern Faryab.
The ministry of interior said in a statement on Tuesday that the insurgents have set an armed attack on the security force’s checkpoints in Qaramqul district of Faryab. According to the statement, the attack was pushed back by the security forces, in which eight Taliban were killed and six other wounded.
Meanwhile, a spokesman for the ministry of defense, Fawad Aman said that eight Taliban fighters have been killed and five others have been detained after the security forces launched counter attacks on the militants. “Five Taliban rebels were killed in Lashkargah (the provincial capital) and three others in Sangin district of Helmand,” he added.
This comes as the Taliban seem to have agreed on an unannounced reduction of violence to lay out prisoners’ release process and intra-Afghan-talks.
