Afghan women find sustainable livelihood in India

By Neelapu Shanti-New Delhi: Many Afghan women migrants in India have learned embroidery skills to earn livelihood for their families.

An NGO named ‘Access’ helps to train these women and provide them employment. The NGO is also partner of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

“We have started this work with a hope to support our family and meet out financial needs. This work will help me to feed my little kids. So, I am happy to work,” said Huma, a migrant from Afghanistan.

Another migrant Parwana said that they shifted to India due to threats from the Taliban.

“My father was killed by Taliban militants and we do not have anyone to look after. Taliban also threatened to kill my brothers and other family members. So we shifted to India,” she said.

“I am trying best to learn this embroidery work and financially support my husband and son. Their income is not sufficient to meet family expenses. This work will add to our income. I want my children to go to school and my husband to be employed,” added another migrant Zarmina. (ANI)
