Afghanistan leaders congratulate Turkey’s victorious Erdogan

KABUL: Former president Hamid Karzai and Taliban Prime Minister Mullah Muhammad Hassan Akhund were among world leaders congratulating Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan after he won Sunday’s historic run-off election.

Thousands of the Afghan refugees in Turkey also celebrated Erdogan’s win in the election. Erdogan’s landmark win is widely celebrated among Afghans as his friendly refugee policies has benefited Afghan diaspora population in Turkey.

Afghanistan’s Taliban Prime Minister Al-Haj Mullah Muhammad Hassan Akhund said he was praying “to the Almighty Allah to grant Turkiye, that has a special regional and global status, further strength, stability and service of religion”.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid in a tweet said that Prime Minister Hassan Akhund extended his “heartfelt congratulations to Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on his victory in the second round of elections and his re-election as the president of Turkey.

“I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to H.E. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on his victory in the second round of elections and his re-election as the President of Turkey, may Allah Almighty grant more strength, stability and religious service to Turkey which plays a vital role in the region and the world. May the brotherhood and friendship of the nations of Afghanistan and Turkey be eternal,” he said.

Former President Hamid Karzai in a tweet congratulated Recep Tayyip Erdogan on his re-election as President of Turkiye, wishing him and Turkish nation “further progress and well-being”.

Erdogan saw off secular challenger Kemal Kilicdaroglu in the second round of voting. According to Turkey’s Supreme Election Council, Erdogan secured 52.14% of the votes. Kilicdaroglu received 47.86%.
