AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: Seventh round of anti-polio vaccination drive kicked off in secure areas of southern Helmand province on Sunday.
Dr. Abdul Ahad Hazem, a provincial health official, said that 800,000 children up to five years of age will get the drops against the crippling disease.
He said that 5,000 vaccinators would administer anti-polio drops to the children during the campaign.
He added that efforts are underway to launch anti-polio campaigns in the Taliban controlled areas as well. “So far there is only one polio affected child in Khanshin district of the province,” he said.
A resident of Musa Qala district, Wahidullah, said that vaccinators fearing to go to the insecure areas to administer anti-polio drops to the children. “The children should be vaccinated on time, as they are future of the country,” he said, urging the government to take practical step for launching anti-polio vaccination drives in insecure areas in order to cover every child.
Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria are the three countries where polio is still endemic.
