Suicide bomber strikes election campaign in Nangarhar, killing 13

By Farhad Naibkhel-KABUL: As many as 13 people were killed and dozens wounded after a suicide bomber ploughed into an election campaign in eastern Nangarhar province on Tuesday afternoon.

A suicide bombing struck election rally of parliament contestant Abdul Naser Mohmand in Kama district of Nangarhar at around 1:30pm, killing 13 and wounding 43 others, said Nangarhar Spokesman Ataullah Khogyani.

Abdul Naser Mohmand has however survived the bombing, he added.

He asserted that elders constituted most of the casualty toll.

The wounded people have been reported to be in serious condition and it is feared casualty toll could rise, said Khogyani.

This is the first attack on an election rally in the volatile eastern Nangarhar province since candidates embarked on campaigning on Friday.

Although Afghan forces have declared security high alert in provinces to arrange for a smooth and hostile-free election campaign drive, this suicide attacker could successfully reach a public rally and blow himself up among hundreds of non-combatants.
