Balkh police accuse officials, lawmakers of protecting drug traffickers

AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: Police Chief of northern Balkh province alleged that a number of high ranking government officials and members of the Wolesi Jirga are protecting drug traffickers.

Sayed Kamal Sadat did not mention names of the officials, but said that a number of high ranking officials and lawmakers are interfering with the duties of police officers in the province. However, he vowed to resist against pressures from officials.

He added that police in the province have arrested as many as 52 drug smugglers this year. He said that they have handed over the arrested drug traffickers to judicial organizations.

“A number of officials and lawmakers are building up pressure on us, but we are committed to resist against such pressures,” TOLOnews quoted Sayed Kamal as saying.

A number of Balkh provincial council members also praised police for their efforts in arresting drug traffickers in the province. They said that a number of influential figures and government officials in the province are violating the law.

Abdul Khaliq, a member of Balkh provincial council, said that violation of law by government officials and influential figures will widen gap between people and the government.
