KABUL: Supporters of powerful militia commander Nezamuddin Qaisari staged demonstration on Monday in the northern province of Balkh to protest an attempt by the government over arresting him.
The government forces launched an operation Sunday to arrest Qaisari in Mazar-e-Sharif city, the provincial capital, but he escaped and a number of his bodyguards were reportedly killed, while some other people including civilians wounded.
The protesters were carrying the bodies of dead people and shouting anti-government slogans. They said that people’s homes were destroyed and damaged in the Qaisari arrest operation and caused panic in the city.
Qaisari led a group of irresponsible armed men in Faryab province. He was arrested and imprisoned last year, but was unexpectedly freed and the government said nothing about his release.
