Chabahar port to be functional by 2018, India hopes

AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: The Indian minister for transport, highways and shipping, Nitin Gadkari has said the trilateral Chabahar port would be operational by 2018, reported by Pajhwok Afghan News.

The Indian minister during his visit to Tehran on Saturday said, “We are keen on developing the Chabahar port and are optimistic of starting operations in 12 to 18 months.”

Chabahar port is situated in the Sistan and Baluchestan province on Iran’s southern coast which can easily accessed from India’s west coast, bypassing Pakistan.

It would provide an alternative to Afghanistan to minimize depend on using Pakistani ports.

Gadkari was quoted as saying by The Times of India:  “Civil construction work has been started. We have finalized tenders worth Rs3.8 billion for equipment. Once the port becomes operational, it will become a growth engine.”
