Cop killed 10 comrades before to join Taliban in Afghanistan’s Uruzgan

KABUL: A cop defected to the Taliban has killed 10 policemen in a remote check-post in southern Uruzgan province, an official told Afghanistan Times.

“Last night, the infiltrator opened fire on his ten fellow policemen and killed all of them, before joining the Taliban in Chinarto district of Uruzgan province,” the governor’s spokesman Dost Naiab told Afghanistan Times.

The deadly “insider attack” took place in a remote mountainous area of the province, the spokesman said.

“After killing all the sleeping policemen at the check-post, the infiltrator joined up with the Taliban. He has also stolen the weapons and ammunitions of the policemen and succeeding in fleeing the area,” Naiab said.

Early on Tuesday morning, Afghan security forces reached the area and after a short gunfight took back control of the check-post and the militants fled the area.

“Fresh troops have been deployed at the check-post and the area is fully under control of the security forces,” the spokesman said, adding that the coffins of the “martyred” policemen have been shifted to Tarinkot, the capital city of Uruzgan.

Initial investigation confirmed that the suspected policeman was working for Taliban and joined them after the incident, but security forces were still investigation the attack.

Taliban spokesman, Qari Yusuf Ahmadi, claimed that their fighters have overran a police check-post in Chinarto district of Uruzgan and seized all their weapons after killing nine policeman including the commander for the post.

The insurgent group has strong presence in remote districts of Uruzgan, particularly in those areas bordering the volatile Helmand and Zabul provinces.

The militant network usually use improvise explosive devices to prevent movement of the Afghan security forces in remote parts of Uruzgan. Therefore, some roads are also blocked for the residents of the province.

In late September 2015, as many as 10 Afghan National Army (ANA) soldiers were killed in an insider attack in Jawzjan province. A soldier defected to the Taliban invited militants to overrun the check-post in Qash Tepa district. Four soldiers lost their lives in grenade attack and six others were killed by militants in the attack.
