Daesh attack repulsed; nine fighters killed in Jawzjan

AT-KABUL: The Afghan security forces have repulsed the comprehensive attack of the Islamic State (IS), also known as Daesh militants, in northern Jawzjan province, leaving several of them dead and wounded, local officials said on Tuesday.

The 209th Shaheen Corps of the Afghan National Army in the North, said a large group of Daesh militants launched a massive attack in Darzad district, but their attack was repulsed by the security forces.

Nine fighters loyal to the Daesh militant have been killed and thirteen others received injuries after receiving teeth-breaking response by the Afghan security forces, the source added.

According to corps, the insurgents attacked security posts of the Afghan security forces—but it has given no detail regarding casualties inflicted to the Afghan forces.

The extremist group (Daesh) has not commented into the issue yet.

Jawzjan is among the relatively volatile provinces in the North where the anti-government armed militant groups including the Taliban insurgents are actively operating in some of its districts.

Earlier this month, as many as fourteen insurgents of the Daesh militants had been killed in an airstrike carried in the same province.

The 209th Shaheen Corps of the Afghan Military said at least two foreign nationals hailing from Uzbekistan were also among those killed.

The Shaheen Corps further added that the airstrikes were conducted on Daesh hideouts in Sardara, Maktab Imam Bukhtari, Bibi Maryam, Aqsai, and Maimana Qeshlaq areas of Darzab.
