Editorial: Another extension

The Unity President Dr. Ashraf Ghani might be considered one of the lucky person for getting extension for his rule from high powered judiciary. Now in according to court decree, Dr. Ghani would remain in power till completion of Presidential polls in next September. Earlier he had got the first ever extension for remaining occupant of the office till July 2019. No one can deny the fact that there is rifts on holding of Presidential polls. Not only US special envoy Dr. Zalmay Khalilzad but also overwhelming majority of the countrymen wants delay of Presidential polls and giving top priority to peace efforts and its fruitful results. The Taliban resistance forces have now made mind for joining of the main stream of political process in Afghanistan but they also desirous for delay to presidential polls. But both President Ghani and Chief Executive Dr. Abdullah Abdullah who are partners in the so-called unity government are firm on holding of Presidential polls. Presidential polls will be held for fourth times whereas in recent past, the Afghans have experienced worst violent parliamentary polls, which had left behind thousands of families bereaved. No one can deny importance’s and legitimacy of polls and democratic process but such importance’s and legitimacy could yield results whenever polls are ensured in peaceful atmosphere. Each and every one is well aware about the ground situation in Afghanistan. From last several years, especially with installation of the unity government in last quarter of 2014, violent acts are on rise and hostilities are fueling day by day in the already war devastated motherland. Now when the US Special envoy has focused almost attention on peace process, therefore, unity government needs to make the process as result oriented, which is possible with taking steps through consensus and mutual understanding. All of the countrymen are attaching great hopes with Zalmay Khalilzad brokered peace efforts as they want an early return of peace and stability. Almost of the Afghans have been made fed up by war and they favour an end to every sort of feud, fights and strange-pulling for power. They are least concerned with the occupant of Presidential Palace but they are concerned with their own lives and properties. They want peace at any cost, which is possible with results-oriented completion of peace task. Instead of making the Presidential polls as a matter of “personal ego,” President Dr. Ashraf Ghani, Chief Executive Dr. Abdullah and other leaders needs to be merciful and let the peace to get success-which is interests of each and every person.
