Election commissions violate public trust, says Danish

KABUL: Second Vice President, Mohammad Sarwar Danish seriously criticizes the Independent Election Commission and Independent Electoral Complaints Commission performances, accusing them of what he says “hurting public trust”.

Danesh on Sunday claimed that “widespread corruption” in the two electoral bodies caused the government and people lose their trust in them, saying that the July’s presidential elections would be worse than last year’s legislative votes if nothing was done to prevent corruption.

He also said of problems in the judicial organs, emphasizing on urgent reforms. But the ministry of justice says most of its decisions are not put in action.

Danesh added that “a weak” electoral body would be unacceptable, urging that the national unity government was committed in bringing reforms in the electoral commissions.

“These commissions could not announce results of the parliamentary elections after three months of the votes,” said Danesh.

Members of parliament and monitoring organs also criticize the electoral bodies, saying they cannot manage upcoming presidential elections.
