Former Wardak police chief arrested on alleged affairs with Taliban

AT-KABUL: Khalil Andarabi, former Wardak Police chief, has been arrested on charges of collaborating with the Taliban while on his way to Turkey from Mazar-i-Sharif airport, local officials said Saturday.

Balkh security officials said that Andarabi wanted to escape but was stopped by airport officials last Sunday.

“Andarabi was officially investigated over the alleged transferring of the Taliban’s designated spy chief in Baghlan, Qari Zahir in a police vehicle,” officials said.

Officials added that the government acted swiftly when rumors surfaced about Andarabi’s involvement in the transfer of the Taliban’s spy boss and appointed a task team to investigate the matter.

Zahir was recently wounded in military action by security forces in the province. He was caught while traveling in a Wardak police vehicle. He had allegedly been on his way to Pakistan, officials said.

Andarabi meanwhile has rejected the allegations against him and called the development a Taliban plot.

He said he never made a deal with the Taliban.”I consider this allegation a conspiracy of the enemies of the people of Afghanistan, but request you wait until the investigation is complete by the security bodies so that the outcome is clear,” Andarabi said.

Several high ranking officials have been accused of similar deeds but until now, no officials suspected have been prosecuted.
