KABUL: Four officials of the Ministry of Public Health were detained on Tuesday on charges of corruption by the National Directorate of Security, officials said.
A government official, who was talking on condition of anonymity, said that two of the detainees were close relatives to the Minister of Public Health, Jawad Osmani. Another two officials were advisors to the minister.
Spokesman for the Attorney General Office, Jamshid Rasuli confirmed the arrest of these officials, saying that they were arrested at the scene of crime while trying to receive bribes. The crackdown was conducted by the AGO in coordination with the NDS, he added. The detainees were under investigation. Rasuli said the AGO would probe the issue impartially and the details would be shared with the people.
But Rasuli did not give details whether the detainees have any link with the minister. The minister and his office also remain silent as of now.
Their arrest comes a day after the NDS announced the detention of three Senators of the Meshrano Jirga on charge of taking bribes in the northern province of Balkh.
They are identified as Mohammad Anwar Bashliq, Mohammad Azim Qoyash and Liyaqatullah Babakarkhil–were arrested on charges of accepting $40,000 in bribe money from customs officials in Kunduz.
The arrest was made by the National Directorate of Security and the Attorney General’s Office, according to a statement.
