AT-KABUL: A female candidate for district council elections has been kidnapped on Tuesday by unknown gunmen in northern Takhar province, official said Wednesday.
She was kidnapped in Darqad district of the province, provincial governor spokesman, Sunatullah Timuri said.
“Fazila, a female candidate for district council elections from Darqad district was going to provincial capital Taluqan city on Tuesday afternoon when anti-government militants intercepted her car and took away the candidate along with her brother to unknown location,” Timuri told Xinhua.
He termed Taliban militants behind abduction, informing of robust efforts to ensure safe release of female candidate and her brother.
The Taliban insurgents are controlling some parts of Darqad district but have not commented over the incident so far.
The elections for Wolesi Jirga, or Lower House of parliament, and district councils are slated for Oct. 20 and since opening the voters’ registration on April 14, over a dozen centers for voters’ registrations have been attacked and hundreds other remain closed due to insecurity.
