Helping people access potable drinking water

The Ground-breaking Ceremony for the KOICA Drinking Water Supply Systems Improvement Project was held at the project site in Barchi area of Kabul City recently.

Rooshan Wulsmal Deputy Minister of Urban Development Affairs, Ministry of Urban Development and Land, Rhee Zha-Hyoung, Ambassador of the Embassy of Republic of Korea in Afghanistan, and EUIJOONG CHOI, Country Director of KOICA Afghanistan Office, officials from concerned Ministries, organizations and around 150 community people attended the ceremony.

The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) signed with Ministry of Urban Development and Land of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan on December, 2016 in order to support US$ 6.5 Million for the drinking water needs of the vulnerable communities living in Barchi Areas of Kabul city.

During the years 2017 and 2018 Design and Build contractor was selected and site survey and technical investigation such as aquifer of the project water quantity and quality, Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) and testing pump for ten deep well conducted.

This project will improve access to safe water supply through the construction and maintenance of a water supply system in the Beest Hazzari area of Barchi, as well as improve hygiene behavior and practice resulting in reduced incidences of waterborne diseases in BeestHazzari area of Barchi.

The KOICA Drinking Water Supply Systems Improvement Project in Barchi Area will provide Water supply system for approximately 17,000 individuals of more than 2,400 households in Beest Hazzari.

This KOICA Project will provide hygiene education to community and capacity building programs to relevant government entities in areas of Policy Planning and Management and operations and maintenance for Water supply system as well.

The United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) is responsible for the project management services and the physical works of project will be done by Dynamic Vision which has completed around 20% works of design and builds water pipe. The project will be completed by October 2019.
