KABUL: The ministry of industry and commerce reported a significant increase in production of herbal plants in the western province of Herat.
A spokesman of the ministry, Fawad Ahmadi said Sunday that based on statics of the provincial chamber of commerce and investment shows that herbs’ exports have been increased last year compare to the previous years.
According to him, over 36,000 tons herbs were produced this year that worth 40 million dollar. The previous years’ production was 20,000 tons with the worth of 21 million dollars.
The herbs that include black and white cumin, basil seeds and other plants are mainly exported to Turkey, India, European and Arab countries.
Afghanistan is one of the top countries, where a large amount of herbs is produced annually. However, due to lack of market for the Afghan crops, the farmer are forced to sell their harvest with low price.
