Indian FM Meets UNAMA Head Otunbayeva to Discuss Afghanistan Situation

Kabul: Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar hold a meeting with Special Representative Roza Otunbayeva, who heads the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), on Thursday morning. In a post on social media platform X, Jaishankar mentioned their discussion on the current situation in Afghanistan and the exchange of viewpoints.

“Glad to receive Special Representative Roza Otunbayeva, Head of UNAMA this morning. Exchanged views on the current situation in Afghanistan,” stated Jaishankar in his post on X.

Jaishankar also highlighted India’s assistance to Afghanistan, including the provision of wheat, medicines, pesticides, and school supplies.

“Underlined that India has provided wheat, medicines, pesticides, and school supplies. Appreciate the role of UN agencies as partners in these endeavors,” added Jaishankar.

In January, India delivered 40,000 liters of Malathion, a pesticide used to combat locust infestations, through the Chabahar port, as part of its continued efforts to assist Afghanistan.

Last month, Roza Otenbayeva, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations and Head of the UN Deputy Mission in Afghanistan, once again raised concerns about the increasing risk that restrictions on women’s rights pose to Afghanistan’s prosperity and integration into the global community.

Otenbayeva urged the Taliban to lift restrictions on women and girls, especially as the world observed International Women’s Solidarity Day on March 8. She regretted the detrimental impact of neglecting women’s empowerment in Afghanistan, emphasizing the need for investing in women to foster peace and prosperity, as stated in a UNAMA statement.

Initial promises of a moderate approach towards women’s rights after seizing power in August 2021, this actions, such as banning higher education for girls beyond the sixth grade and imposing strict rules on women, underscore their intent to further marginalize women in Afghan society.
