IS eyes Kunar after defeat in Nangarhar: Official

AT-KABUL: In a tactical shift, the dreaded IS has turned its face towards Kunar—an eastern province that border Pakistan’s tribal belt, after facing defeat in eastern Nangarhar, said local security officials.

The commander of 201st Selab military corps, Muhammad Zaman Waziri, said that Afghan security forces managed to foil evil designs of militants in Nangarhar province. “The IS militants wanted to collapse districts of the province and then attack Jalalabad, the capital city of Nangarhar,” he added.

Waziri said that security forces defeated the terrorist group in Achin district of the province and foiled all plans of the IS militants.

Waziri confirmed the rumors that following their defeat in Nangarhar, Daesh has started recruitments in eastern Kunar province. He said that security forces in Afghanistan’s east have full preparations to respond the terrorists escalation in Kunar province with an iron fist.

Security forces conducted several military offensives against the militants in eastern Afghanistan over the past two months. According to security sources, Afghan forces have killed 635 militants, wounded 419 others and arrested some 60 would-be militants in the operations. Security forces have also recovered a large number of weapons. As many as 11 Afghan soldiers have also been killed in the operations, while 18 others injured.
