KABUL: Kabul police and health workers fan out on Wednesday across the Kabul city and rounded up at least 400 drug addicts for medical treatment. The campaign launched by Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) in joint venture with Kabul police in the fight against heroin and opium.
The drug abusers were collected from Pul-e-Sokhta area at 6th PD of Kabul, MoPH said in a statement.
According to the statement, the addicted people were shifted to addiction treatment center for medical treatment.
Head of Drug Demand Reduction Department of MoPH, Dr. Shahpoor Yusof said fanning out of this campaign is aimed to round up and rescue addicted people, who don’t have access to shelter and passing days and nights on the street during this cold winter. He said that addicted round up campaign has been run in different provinces and so far 800 drug addicts collected.
Poverty, joblessness and conflict have been the main factor behind people’s addiction to the drugs. Unfortunately, they could easily get narcotics because it is being sold across the country.
Ministry of Interior (MoI)’s Counter Narcotics Cell Director, Ershad Nazari said that counternarcotics police exert utmost efforts to stop drug traffickers. “Nine big drug dealers were apprehended by police this year.”
MoPH has rounded up 200 drug abusers from Sarai Shamali area of 17th PD three days ago and shifted them to addicted treatment clinics for treatment.
There are 107 addicted treatment centers across the country that covers and treat around 200,000 drug addicted people annually.
