Karzai calls on regional powers to ‘pay serious attention’ to Afghanistan’s situation

KABUL: Former President Hamid Karzai called on the regional powers to pay serious attention to the situation in Afghanistan, saying that the country was in a critical situation.

Karzai cited the remarks in an online conference hosted by the Xinhua University of China at the World Peace Forum in Beijing. Former President said that under the format of Trioka conference beside the presence of U.S. and Pakistan, the role of China and Russia could help in securing peace in Afghanistan.

“As an Afghan, feel a lot more hopeful about a better future than I was before, because we are now on our own,” Karzai said regarding the exit of foreign forces. Ensuring peace in Afghanistan was the interest of Afghanistan and the entire neighboring countries, former president suggested.

“If we join hands, we will certainly gain it sooner rather than later,” he remarked, calling the US-led war is in Afghanistan a failure.

This comes as under the U.S.-Taliban peace deal, the U.S. led NATO allies are departing Afghanistan after 20-year presence. But violence remained in an unabated high level.

However, Karzai said that U.S.-led Afghan war is a failure and the U.S. troop withdrawal does not mean that the country will fall into further instability and chaos.
