Karzai declines membership in reconciliation council

KABUL: Former President, Hamid Karzai reacted to his inclusion in the High Council for National Reconciliation, saying that he would not take part in “any government structure”.

In a statement, Karzai said on Friday that he would make efforts for peace on “as a citizen” of Afghanistan.

President Ashraf Ghani appointed the members of the reconciliation led by his former rival in last year’s presidential election Abdullah Abdullah.

Karzai’s name was among the 46 members of the list.

Former jihadi leaders, political figures and civil society activists such as Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, Mohammad Karim Khalili, Mohammad Muhaqeq, Abdul Rassoul Sayyaf, Marshal Abdul Rashid Dostum, Younus Qanooni, Salahuddin Rabbani, Ismael Khan, Atta Noor, Sayed Hamed Gilani, Zabihullah Mojaddedi, Sayed Mansour Naderi, Enayatullah Shahrani, Engineer Mohammad Khan, Ismael Ghazanfar, Dr. Sadeq Modabber, Khodaidad Saleh, Safia Seddiqi, Mary Akrami, Najiba Ayyoubi, Shah Gol Rezaie, Alia Yalmaz, Zarqa Yaftali, Farida Mohmand and Nasrin Oryakhil are the members of the council.
