KABUL: Former President Hamid Karzai welcomed the major Pashtun Jirga (Assembly) in the Bannu area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The Former President announced his support for the outcomes of the gathering and termed it as a good step for countering the problems in Afghanistan and the region.
Karzai also praised the widespread participation of women in the gathering as well as the results of the Jirga which were calling for the active role of women in political, economic, social and cultural aspects.
The participants at the three-day gathering in Bannu city of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa called for the convening of Loya Jirga and election to lead to an elected government in Afghanistan.
At this three-day-long Jirga, the matters which are impacting the Pashtun on both sides of the Line were discussed at this gathering.
In a 25-article statement released at the end of the jirga, the participants have said a Loya Jirga and general elections should be held in Afghanistan to elect a representative government in the country.
The statement says a ‘republican’ government should be formed in Afghanistan that is in line with all international standards.
“The demand of this jirga is that an elective and representative government should be formed through Loya Jirga and general elections in Afghanistan,” the statement reads.
