Deputy FM reaches in Islamabad for ‘Heart of Asia’ conference

AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL:  Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hekmat Khalil Karzai, reached Islamabad on Sunday, to represent Afghanistan in the meeting of senior authorities at the Heart of Asia-Istanbul Process.

The Heart of Asia-Istanbul Process was launched in 2011 in Turkey to bring Afghanistan’s neighboring and regional countries together at one platform for promotion of peace and security in the war-hit country.

According to Afghanistan’s embassy in Pakistan, the deputy foreign minister would co-chair the meeting with Pakistan’s Foreign Secretary Aziz Ahmad Chaudhry on Monday.

Last year the conference was hosted by China. Pakistan will host the fifth ministerial conference this year. Representatives of 12 participating countries, 16 supporting countries and 12 international and regional organizations had been invited to attend the meeting.

The foreign ministry of Pakistan in a media statement said that as the co-chair, Islamabad will take initiatives to take the process forward from the Beijing conference held last year in October.

“It will play a lead role in various activities of the Process, including three Senior Officials Meetings to discuss topics pertaining to the theme of this year’s Ministerial Conference i.e. Heart of Asia-Istanbul Process: Enhanced Cooperation for Countering Security Threats and Promoting Economic Connectivity,” the statement said.
