Khalilzad appreciates Pakistan’s role in facilitating intra-Afghan talks

KABUL: The US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad during his visit to Islamabad thanked and appreciated Pakistan for its important role in facilitating the start of the Afghanistan Peace Negotiations in Doha on September 12.

“US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad visited Islamabad on September 14. In a meeting with Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa and other senior Pakistani officials, ambassador Khalilzad thanked Pakistan for its role in advancing the Afghanistan peace process,” US embassy in Pakistan said in statement on Tuesday.

Ambassador Khalilzad expressed appreciation on behalf of the United States, especially the important role that Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and General Bajwa played in facilitating the start of the Afghanistan Peace Negotiations in Doha on September 12, and stressed the need for ongoing regional and international support for this historic opportunity for peace, the statement added.

As Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo said, “The United States will never forget the solidarity of our many allies and partners who have stood with us in the long struggle to end this war.”

The Afghan and Taliban negotiating teams are on Doha, they will hold their first direct session today (Tuesday) to end war in the country. The contact group from both sides’ delegations continued the discussion on rules and procedures to present it to the general meeting between the two negotiating teams,” Nader Nadery said.
