KABUL: The US envoy for Afghan peace, Zalmay Khalizad is to start his fifth visit to the regional countries to accelerate the peace process in Afghanistan, the US department of state confirmed, without providing details over his first destination.
Pakistani newspaper Today, has reported that Khalilzad would first land in Islamabad to hold talks with Pakistani officials before his negotiation program with Taliban planned to be held in Qatar.
The newspaper has called the visit important for reaching a peace agreement with Taliban insurgents, adding that he would depart before February 20th.
Khalilzad has so far met four times with Taliban negotiators. He paid visit to China, India, Pakistan and Qatar, where he held a six-day long negotiation with the insurgents.
Afghan foreign ministry did not comment on the visit, but President Ghani’s adviser Karim Amin said more trips and negotiations were needed to solve current problems in Afghanistan.
He said that Pakistan could play an important role in helping Afghans solve their problems.
