NDS foils mass prison break attempt in Herat

AT-KABUL: The National Directorate of Security (NDS) has foiled mass prison break attempt in Herat province.
The Afghan spy agency foiled the bid by arresting a man, identified as Ghulam Nabi, who was digging a tunnel into the prison.

In a media statement issued here, the NDS said on Sunday that it has arrested Nabi, a resident of Herat City, who wanted to help the prisoners to escape through the secret tunnel that he dug a few kilometers.

In another operation, the spy agency arrested two money exchangers who were facilitating the transfer of cash between the insurgents. They were identified as Mohammad and Abdul Ghani. The two were arrested from Shindand district of Herat province. They planned to transfer PKR 294,000 to Mullah Jamil, the Taliban’s shadow district chief for Shindand district.

The NDS also detained Mullah Ghawsuddin who was collecting funds for the Taliban insurgents in the name of religion.

The spy agency operatives also secured release of two kidnapped residents of Faryab province.

The two were kidnapped by the Taliban in Kurkh district of Herat province. The NDS operatives carried out a successful operation and reunited the freed men with their families.
