Nuristan governor escapes unscathed after assassination attempt

KABUL: A number of unidentified armed men attacked Hafiz Abdul Qayum, the governor of the eastern Nuristan province, killing one of his guards, and one another wounded.

Qayum, who confirmed the incident, said that the attack occurred in the nighborhood of Kabul, Mahipar on Sunday early morning, while he was on his way to Kabul from Nuristan.

The wounded guard is said to be his nephew too.

The reason behind the incident is yet to clear and no militant group, including the Taliban, has asserted responsibility for the attack.
