By Farhad Naibkhel-KABUL: Ministry of Defense (MoD) on Monday said that operations against militants are underway in 26 different parts of the country. These areas are labeled as “high threat” on the security chart.
Operation Chief at the defense ministry, Gen. Afzal Aman, said that insurgents had carried out 1,600 different attacks including suicide bombing and ambushes in the past four months. He said the attacks were repelled by army in collaboration with police and the National Directorate of Security.
Speaking at a press conference here, he said that Afghan National Army (ANA) troops are well prepared to fight insurgents and ensure stability.
“The Taliban believed that after completion of the security transition process, Afghan forces will fail to defend the country. Thus, they planned and conducted different subversive attacks in various parts of the country. They wanted to capture areas, but faced strong resistance,” he said.
Gen. Aman said that scores of militants were killed in the past four months. However, he did not provide details.
Speaking about deteriorating security situation in the northern provinces, he said that insecurity was already there in these parts, but increased recently. He assured that the Afghan security forces would never let the anti-state elements to succeed in their nefarious designs. Gen. Aman also claimed that security threats were neutralized.
He said, “The terrorists that are fighting in Afghanistan are supported by strangers. Foreign militants too have presence in the country. They are also fighting security forces.”
Deputy Spokesman to the defense ministry, Dawlat Waziri, said the Taliban suffered heavy casualties in the past two months. “Afghan troops have broken backbone of the Taliban,” he claimed.
He said that all military operations were planned, executed and led by Afghan security forces.
Waziri said the Taliban insurgents have increased attacks to show their presence, but it would be the last show of might by the insurgent group.
