Pakistan awaits Ghani’s response on visit to Islamabad

AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: Pakistani media reported on Sunday that Pakistan was still looking for President Ashraf Ghani’s feedback to know whether he will join the Heart of Asia International Conference in Islamabad this week.

According to Pakistan Foreign Office statement, Afghan President Ghani and Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif may jointly inaugurate the regional conference on Afghanistan on December 9 in Islamabad.

“I look forward to the visit of Afghan President Ghani to Islamabad in a bid to jointly inaugurate the Heart of Asia meeting on December 9,” Pakistan’s foreign office quoted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif as saying.

The statement added that Nawaz Sharif will discuss with Ghani on the sidelines of the Heart of Asia meeting should Ghani visit Islamabad.  Pakistan wills to discuss with Afghanistan the role US and China in resumption of peace talks which was stalled by Mullah Omar’s death news in July 2015 after the Taliban confirmed their leader was dead.

Forty three countries and organizations are expected to participate in the conference.

Foreign Minister, Salahuddin Rabbani is attending the conference, however, it still remains unclear if President Ghani is visiting Pakistan.

President Ashraf Ghani held discussions with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif where they agreed to revive the stalled peace talks.
