Pakistani premier pledges manpower to Afghanistan amid criticism

AT News

KABUL: Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Friday directed relevant authorities to “explore bilateral cooperation with friendly countries” to avert a looming humanitarian crisis in the neighbouring state by exporting qualified and trained manpower, especially in the fields of medical, IT, finance and accounting.

“Pakistan is committed to providing all-out support to Afghan people to avert [a] humanitarian crisis,” the premier said while chairing the third meeting of the Apex Committee on Afghanistan.

His remarks have faced blowback in Afghanistan. Many politicians and civilians criticized Pakistani government’s duplicity for trying to ignore the vast talent pool inside Afghanistan. https://platform.twitter.com/embed/Tweet.html?dnt=false&embedId=twitter-widget-0&features=eyJ0ZndfZXhwZXJpbWVudHNfY29va2llX2V4cGlyYXRpb24iOnsiYnVja2V0IjoxMjA5NjAwLCJ2ZXJzaW9uIjpudWxsfSwidGZ3X2hvcml6b25fdHdlZXRfZW1iZWRfOTU1NSI6eyJidWNrZXQiOiJodGUiLCJ2ZXJzaW9uIjpudWxsfSwidGZ3X3NwYWNlX2NhcmQiOnsiYnVja2V0Ijoib2ZmIiwidmVyc2lvbiI6bnVsbH19&frame=false&hideCard=false&hideThread=false&id=1481989896474886148&lang=en&origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.dawn.com%2Fnews%2F1669416&sessionId=76d8abe2605144aabeb2101b9ffb804838a4d55b&siteScreenName=dawn_com&theme=light&widgetsVersion=86e9194f%3A1641882287124&width=550px This is as the UN has been urging the global community to provide aid to Afghanistan and also called to unfreeze Afghan assets, citing a looming humanitarian crisis in the aftermath of an economic collapse since the Taliban takeover in August last year.

Earlier this week, the UN and partners had launched their largest ever country-specific appeal for Afghanistan. And yesterday, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres had appealed for the suspension of rules preventing the use of money in Afghanistan to save lives and for a path to the conditional release of frozen Afghan foreign currency reserves, according to Reuters.

UN aid agencies describe Afghanistan’s plight as one of the world’s most rapidly growing humanitarian crises. The UN humanitarian coordination office reported recently that half the population faced acute hunger, over nine million people abandoned their homes and millions of children were out of school.
