People protest civilian casualties by government forces in Laghman

KABUL: Tens of people in the eastern province of Laghman took to the streets on Monday to protest killing of one civilian and injuring of two more by the intelligence operatives.

The protesters blocked road to Kabul and said that the National Directorate of Security’s unit 02 attacked civilians, killing a schoolboy and wounding two women in the Farmankhil village of Qarghaie district.

They carried the body on their shoulders and chanted anti-government and anti-US slogans, while blocking the main road linking the provincial capital to Kabul for several hours.

The protesters also said that the intelligence operatives took a number of villagers to unknown places without any charges.

The NDS rejected having hands in the operation.

The protesters warned of harsh measures if the perpetrators of the civilian casualties were not tried.

Head of provincial council said police patrolling in the area came under fire from a house in Qarghaie district, in which one officer was killed and two injured. He said that one civilian was also killed during the shootout.
