AT-JALALABAD: Polio vaccination drive kicked off in eastern region on Sunday. Public Health director of Nangarhar province said that 936,000 children will be administrated drops against the crippling disease during the campaign.
Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, Najibullah Kamawal, said 6,000 vaccinators will administrate the polio drops to around 936,000 children in eastern provinces of Afghanistan. He added that around 30,000 children Ghanikhel district of Nangarhar, deprived of polio vaccination in the past, will be also vaccinated against the viral disease.
The acting governor of Nangarhar province, Ataullah Lodin, called on militant groups to cooperate with vaccinators to administrate the drops to children. He also urged religious scholars to raise public awareness about importance of the vaccination drive.
According to an official source, six cases of polio have been confirmed in eastern provinces of Afghanistan. Out of the six cases, three cases were registered in Nangarhar, two in Laghman and another was reported in Kunar province.
