President pardons Musafir

AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: Najibullah Musafir, a photojournalist who was imprisoned for six months has been pardoned by President Ashraf Ghani.

The president has issued a decree that in which he has pardoned the remaining imprisonment period of Najibullah Musafir. The photojournalist was arrested about three weeks back and sent to Pul-i-Charkhi prison in Kabul after a court sentenced him six months imprisonment without his presence.

The arrest raised concerns of NAI, an organization that supports open media in Afghanistan, as well as other organizations defending journalists’ rights.

Musafir was sentenced for pictures taken during basketball play of girls in Kabul’s Ghazi Stadium but the picture was reported used by a telecommunication company in the advertisement.

The NAI director, Sediqullah Tawhidi, had said that the pictures were taken for news coverage. “The pictures were taken for news purposes and Najibullah should not be held responsible for anything in this regard”, he told a news conference in Kabul.

Musafar’s family members stated that he was cleared of all charges eight years back when the issue was raised.
