KABUL: Russian President Vladimir Putin has lauded UN President Joe Biden’s controversial decision to withdraw all troops from Afghanistan as a correct decision.
Talking to gathered experts and journalists at the Valdai discussion, Vladimir Putin said that putting an end to America’s military engagement in Afghanistan was wise as Biden took responsibility following his conviction.
“Biden must have understood, maybe he did not know in detail how, but he understood that one way or another, this would be one of the lines of attack in internal policies, but he went for it,” said Putin.
The Russian president praised his American counterpart for his “courage” though, criticized the hasty decision of withdrawal, and added that it could have been different.
Putin also said that he was moving forward to removing the Taliban from their list of terrorist organizations but added that the UN must take the lead first.
Previously, Russian authorities including the Foreign minister Sergey Lavrov slammed the US’s decision and had accused the country of creating a crisis in the region.
Earlier, China, former Afghan officials, and the US politicians too criticized the US decision over the full withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan.
The statements come days after Moscow hosted Moscow Format over Afghanistan in which the member states unanimously agreed to interact with the Taliban as new Afghan authorities.
