Remaining 11 provinces to get governors within 10-day: Popal

AT-KABU: The Independent Directorate of Local Governance (IDLG) said Monday that within ten days the National Unity government will appoint new governors for the remaining 11 provinces.

Ghulam Jailani Popal, the General Director of IDLG in an interview to Afghanistan Times said the two political leaders of the National Unity Government reached consensus on appointment of 11 new governors. Popal said that 23 governors were appointed however the rest of 11 provinces were being run by acting governors. He added that President Ashraf Ghani and Chief Executive Abdullah are interviewing new candidates for the office of governors in the remaining 11 provinces and their names will be made public after deserving candidates are approved. “Capacity of running the provincial affairs is the first priority for the two leaders,” he stated. Since the National Unity Government has been plagued by internal bickering, which is why governors couldn’t be appointed and also the cabinet couldn’t be formed in time.

The lingering crisis inside the government and the delay in the appointments of the governors has caused a steady surge in insecurity across the country.
